How can I use the Lock feature?

4/21/2021

When working on a multitudinous environment (e.g. your company's office) you may not want your notifications or reminder data to be exposed and displayed to other people while you are away from you desk.

Therefore StarReminder can be locked to prevent that. Right click on the Tray Icon and select "Lock" or from the main window select "File > Lock". All StarReminder's windows are closed and for any pending notifications you are informed via a balloon hint, which pops from the Tray Icon.

Click on the Tray Icon or right click on the Tray Icon and select "UnLock" to unlock StarReminder. If a password is set, it will be required to unlock it.

If a password is not set, the Lock feature works like a "mute" and any "unauthorized" person can display your data.

Even if StarReminder is locked you can still add Tasks and Post-It notes.

What is StarReminder’s URL highlighting?

12/17/2013

URL highlighting is the ability of StarReminder to recognize URL syntax inside text content. Either inside a Task’s text notes or a Post-It’s text notes StarReminder will recognize URL syntax and will highlight it with separate color. A hand cursor will appear moving mouse over the URL.

For example type a URL www.starreminderapp.com and click on it to visit this URL using your installed internet browser.

Type an email address (using the mailto: prefix) (eg.:mailto:[email protected]) and click on it to open a new email message using your installed email client software.

How can I setup StarReminder to run on Windows start up?

3/28/2013

Open the Main window and from the menu choose "Help > Preferences" and click on the "System" tab. Check the “Run on Windows startup (requires Administrator privileges)” preference.

Note that if your Windows’ user account does not have Administrator privileges then you will receive an error message: “Cannot Enable or Disable the "Run on Windows startup" option. Please check your Security Policy settings and make sure that StarReminder is allowed to read and write to the Windows registry”.

You can either:
  1. Elevate your Windows’ user account to Administrator and check the preference as instructed in the previous paragraph. Additionally you can use the "Run as Administrator" Windows option, or
  2. You can add StarReminder in Windows’ Start up folder so it can run on Windows Start up.

Add StarReminder in Windows startup folder on Windows 8
(note: simular instructions apply to Windows 10, also)

When I launch StarReminder I get an "Invalid database format or database corrupted" message.

12/18/2012

This error occurs because your database has been corrupted due to an instant electrical power loss or an abnormal program termination.

In order to fix this you must locate the latest database backup file and copy it to your database location.
Rename the latest database backup file to 'StarReminder.dat’ and copy it to your database location.
Launch StarReminder and check your data.

Database path location
Depending upon StarReminder's version the database is located either:
in StarReminder’s installation folder (e.g. 'C:\StarReminder') or,
in '[Windows' Documents folder]\StarReminder' folder.

Here you can read where you can locate your backup files:

Setup StarReminder to launch when USB disk is plugged in the computer.
This is a Windows feature and it is called Autoplay. It must be enabled through Windows' environment.

IMPORTANT:
  • The Autoplay feature does not work in all Windows machines or USB disks.
  • Check if an Autorun.inf file already exists in the USB disk. If, so this means that another installed application uses the Autoplay feature. You should backup the existing  Autorun.inf file first.
